AS A PAINTER
I find myself to be inspired by everyday activities, often perceive as ordinary, that I saw around me or places I visited. Sometimes the scenes just grabbed me, and instantaneously I knew I had to express them in my drawings or my paintings. They were varied and usually happened unexpectedly. From a two-second view through a car window looking at the people hanging their laundries in a very modest neighborhood, to street vendors patiently tending their sale, to kids leisurely riding their bikes. I painted or drew them as I imagined or wondered about their stories or conversations at those moments.
One of the many privileges as a world traveler is the chance to witness the amazing and significant characters of each place I visited. The rich culture, distinct city fabric, unforgettable landscape, and so on. There is such a wealth of inspirations we can find when we travel. In a unique way I truly believe I help tell those stories and share those experiences through my works.
I use black ink in combination with acrylic paint, charcoal and oil pastel. Not necessarily all together. I love the strong gesture and contrast the black ink produces. It playfully conveys the feelings and composition I try to achieve.
AS A SCULPTOR
It all started as an experiment and a challenge. Determined to find a way to repurpose a specific used material, bottle corks. The challenge was to create something beautiful and elegant by using this material unexpectedly. Through trials and tribulations, I finally discovered a method to alter them into a modular and less recognizable form. With this new form, I started by creating some light fixtures that have beautiful textures and yet simple in form. From there I decided to step it up into creating larger and organic sculptures and continued to play with integrated lighting features to enhance the forms. Which also created interesting light cast through them. I really appreciate the design challenges that each sculpture required. I can see the endless possibilities of what I can create with this material.
