Tipang Gateway

Tipang, Indonesia

Completed - 2017

Situated on the Southwest end of Lake Toba, Tipang is a small village in North Sumatra surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful nature.

Purba studio was involved as the designer for the project, and was assisting the local team remotely through out the construction phase.

Unlike the conventional gateways found in most towns or cities, we were inspired to create a unique and memorable arrival point. We wanted visitors to stop and take their time to appreciate the beautiful view instead of just driving through it.

The Gateway design concept was inspired by the tall mountain hills surrounding the lake, natural spring fed rivers and creeks, luscious greens and their rich culture. The design also depicts the legendary philosophy of the village.

Community Meetings

The project committee was largely consisted of a group of emigrated members of the community who live all over the country, yet still have such strong tie to the village (called: Perantau). Admirably, the team worked together remotely through digital communications, with occasional visits to the site. The team successfully coordinated the whole process with the local leaders and community members from the beginning to project completion.
